Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
There is a pill to prevent HIV? Yes!
PrEP is a once-a-day pill for people who do not have HIV and want added protection. It is available by prescription, and must be taken every day – like birth control but for HIV prevention.
PrEP is also now available as an every other month in injection!
While PrEP is highly effective in preventing HIV, it does not protect against other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Condoms protect against most other STDs, as well as HIV and pregnancy.
A healthcare provider can help decide if PrEP is a good fit for you.
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is a preventative treatment used after a potential exposure to HIV, such as a condom breaking or sharing a used needle. It is most effective at preventing HIV transmission when started within 72 hours of possible exposure. If you think you have been exposed, contact the below provider or go to your nearest emergency room right away.
